Ship Visiting Program
1. Commit 2 or 3 hours to visit ships. Only one ship will be visited on each day that time is voluneered so that relationships might be given the chance to be established. The primary purpose of the program is to allow personal relationships between a particular church representative and seafarers to have quality time together. Most of these visits will be focused on ships where all or part of the crew do not have shore passes. There should be at least two visitors from the church participating in each visit.
2. All ship visiting teams will receive training from Chaplains before you are allowed into the program.
3. The team must receive clearance from the Port Authority Police and receive a badge for entrance to the docks.
4. Ships will be visited on each occasion only after the Chaplain has been informed and received permission from the ship Captain that such visitors will be acceptable. The Chaplain should also be informed of any items or materials which you intend to take to the crew. This activity will not replace the normal Chaplain Ship Visit which occurs regularly. The Chaplain will also transport the visitors to and from the ship after the volunteer arrives at the Center.
5. Other services such as shopping, transportation for crew, crew work contract problems, etc. should be handled by the Chaplain and not by the Ship Visitor.
6. The Ship Visitor will carry complete liability through personal and/or his or her church insurance. A waiver of Center or Port responsibility will be signed in order to participate in the program in the event that the visitor is ever allowed to drive directly to the docks.
7. The Ship Visitor may call upon a Chaplain whenever a need arises which must be taken care of on a ship or with a crew.
8. The Ship Visitor may take a telephone on the ship provided by the Seafarers' Center which the crew may use to make their phone calls. If possible, the church may supply phone recharge cards which may be bought in the center store for about $40. Board games may also be taken by the Ship Visitor to play with the crew who may not be working. Candies and snacks might be appropriate for you to take to the ship visited.
